In Canada, a student visa is referred to as a study permit. All foreign nationals planning to study at designated learning institutions in Canada requires to get an admission to be eligible for applying for study permit. International students must obtain Student Authorization and Visa before leaving for Canada. Student must meet all the requirements of the Canadian Immigration Regulations before travelling to study in Canada.

Right document requirements for study permit application:

  • Proof of acceptance:
    • Official letter of acceptance from approved Canadian university/college/institute
  • Proof of identity:
    • Passport/travel documents
    • recent passport size photographs
  • Statement of purpose
  • Medical report (if undertaken)
  • Other documents (if relevant)
  • Proof of financial support:
    • Proof of a Canadian bank account in your name, if you have transferred money to Canada
    • Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a participating Canadian financial institution
    • proof of a student/education loan from a bank
    • your bank statements for the past four months
    • a bank draft that can be converted to Canadian dollars
    • proof you paid tuition and housing fees
    • a letter from the person or school giving you money or
    • proof of funding paid from within Canada if you have a scholarship or are in a Canadian-funded educational program.

Under Student Partners Program (SPP) process, student needs to purchase a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (G.I.C.) account and deposit CAD$ 10,200 as a proof of their living expense for one year in their account. The student should process G.I.C. once the Letter of Acceptance is received from the college. This process takes about 10 - 15 working days.

Student should create a new email id with Scotia Bank and this process may take 4 - 5 days. Once the account is ready, student needs to make a payment of 10,200 CAD$ from his/her account through a wire transfer; from which 10,000 CAD$ would be deposited in student’s G.I.C. Account while 200 CAD$ is deducted as Administration charge by Scotia Bank. It may take up to 3 or 4 days for the money to get credited in the G.I.C. account.

The student should take a print of the receipt of payment to G.I.C. Account and this receipt should be self-attested in the file while submitting the Visa application.

Students are required to open a savings account in Scotia Bank where they will get 2000 CAD$ credited right away for their living expense and the remaining balance will be received in their account every alternate month in equal instalments for their living expenses through the entire year.
